How Many Times Can HPLC Autosampler Vials Be Reused?

When it comes to HPLC analysis, autosampler vials play a critical role in ensuring reliable, consistent results. These small but essential containers hold your liquid samples as they are injected into the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system.

But how many times can you actually reuse HPLC autosampler vials before they need to be replaced? The answer depends on several factors, including the vial material, your sample types and your cleaning and handling protocols.

Glass vs. plastic vials

The most common autosampler vial materials are glass and plastic, typically polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene terephthalate (PETE). Glass vials generally have a longer reuse life than plastic vials because they are less susceptible to scratches, cracks and other physical damage from repeated use.

Glass vials can often be reused 50-100 times or more, provided they are cleaned and handled properly. The glass material is more durable and resistant to degradation by aggressive sample matrices or cleaning solvents. Plastic vials, on the other hand, may only last for 20-50 reuses before showing signs of wear and tear and potentially compromising sample integrity. The plastic can become pitted, discoloured or physically deformed over time, compromising the vial seal and leading to potential sample leakage or contamination.

The sample factor

The type of samples you run also plays a role in determining vial reuse. More aggressive, corrosive or adhesive sample matrices will cause more rapid degradation of vials, both glass and plastic. Samples containing acids, bases, organic solvents or other reactive compounds can etch, pit or discolour vial surfaces over time.

Highly sticky or fouling samples, such as proteins or polymers, can also build up residues that are difficult to completely remove even after thorough cleaning. This residue build-up can lead to carryover, cross-contamination and unreliable results when vials are re-used. In general, the “cleaner” your samples are – i.e. less particulate, less reactive and less prone to fouling – the more times you’ll be able to reuse your autosampler vials.

Cleaning and handling

Proper cleaning and handling protocols are critical to maximising the reuse life of HPLC autosampler vials. Carefully follow the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning procedures, using solvents, detergents and techniques appropriate to the vial material. This will ensure thorough removal of any sample residues or contaminants without damaging the vial.

Avoid touching the inside of vials with bare hands as this may introduce contaminants. Use gloves, tweezers or special tools for handling vials. Store cleaned vials in a protected environment to avoid contamination by dust or other airborne particles before reuse.

With good cleaning and handling practices, even plastic vials can often be reused 20-30 times or more for less complex sample matrices. However, for the most reliable, reproducible results, it’s generally recommended to use fresh vials for each HPLC injection.
